We recently have been doing home visits. I have loved every minute of it. I love being able to meet the whole family and see how my students are at home. I also love getting to know the parents more. Each family is so unique and different and they are all so amazing. I am so grateful for the families we have at Woodrow Wilson and I can't wait to do more home visits and meet even more of them.

APTT went great. I am so grateful to the families that came and I am grateful to the students who invited their parents. We had all the sixth graders get together to make the invitations. Multiplication Facts GamesEven if you weren't able to make it to APTT you can still play the multiplication games with your child. All you need is a deck of cards and you are set. Here are the instructions for the two games... Multiplication War
Salute
Directions: 1. The “General” shuffles the deck of cards, holds them face down, and instructs the two “Sergeants” to choose a card, but not look at it. 2. When the General gives the command to “salute” each of the Sergeants salute by bringing the card up to their foreheads, without looking at their own cards. 3. The General tells them the product of the two cards. 4. By looking at the card of the other player, each Sergeant must determine the value of his or her own card. 5. The first Sergeant to answer with the correct value of his or her own card wins both cards. 6. The players keep going until the general’s cards are gone. 7. The sergeant with the most cards becomes the new general! End of our Bread Mold ExperimentMicroorganisms are done. Here are some pictures of the final results of that experiment. Some of them got pretty gross. One of the worst ones was wiped on our door handle. I hope that everyone makes sure to wash their hands often. You never know what microorganisms you may have touched during the day. We also have had our compost chamber and its been decomposing nicely.
These are the movies of the stories the students acted out. I unfortunately didn't get "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" or "The Cricket and the Jaguar" on video. To be able to get them on this website I put it on Youtube. I have made them unlisted though so they can't be found and only seen here.
The time is passing by so quickly. One month has come and gone and we have done a lot of learning. These past two weeks have been filled with lots of fun activities. I think the students favorite activity was acting out different stories so that their other classmates had to guess what it was. We have been focusing on the importance of character and setting and also the events that take place and their order. A way to practice this and see their importance was acting it out. We have also been learning about the presidential elections. This is part of our current history, which we learn about, and is important to know. We have lots of differing opinions in the classroom on the subject. Some of the kids are upset that they aren't allowed to vote even. Here are a few of their opinions on who should be the next president. Also this past Sunday was September 11th. I am sure many of you remember it and where you were when you heard the news. The students though weren't alive when it happened but it is something to learn about as recent history. We discussed the importance of being patriotic and remembering the heroes of that day. To help us remember we created a class "quilt" to recognize heroes and supporting our country.
MicroorganismsYou may wonder what all the moldy bread talk is about and I'm about to show you. There are different types of microorganisms that exist in our world. They are bacteria, fungus, virus, and protozoa. To be able to see some of them we decided to grow some mold. They need warm moist places to live so our classroom has been pretty warm. The work paid off though and we have some pretty nasty looking mold on some of our bread. We have also continued to have our compost bottle which has been being decomposed. Lets just say you might not want to open the bottle.
United Way VolunteersThis week we had some volunteers come in to read with the students. They read them Because of Winn Dixie. It was great to see the students get involved in the reading. One group even was passing around the book and each taking a turn to read. Moldy ScienceMicroorganisms can sure be interesting but it an also be disgusting. The compost (fruit and soil) is really starting to decompose. This is because of the bacteria and other microorganisms in the soil and fruit. Recess FunAmazing BehaviorThis week the students had a sub while I was sick. I have only heard good reports about their behavior. I really appreciate how well behaved your children are. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to teach your children. I love having each and everyone of them in my classroom and love how their different personalities bring about a wonderful classroom atmosphere.
Science is Fun!This week we did a lot with science and the scientific process. We did an experiment with how many water drops can a coin hold. We also started an experiment with fruit and soil to begin watching the effects that microorganisms have in our environment. As you may be able to see even after only two days the peach began to grow some mold. Remarkable BehaviorThis week we have had some really good behavior in our class. I want to highlight to students though who went above and beyond. They both clipped off the chart and got to have their names on my lanyard. So congratulations to Melanie and Abishek. This week was also eventful with an assembly and rotations around to school to help all the students learn about the school rules and how to behave. Hopefully they learned a lot and better behavior will be seen by all and more will be able to clip off the chart.
The first week of school is over and I have loved learning about my students. We have done many activities and gotten to learn about each other. One activity we did was Cultural Suitcases. We all have a culture that we keep and it includes all our traditions, languages, places we come from, beliefs, etc. We bring all of these in a suitcase to combine in our classroom to then create our classroom culture. Cultural SuitcasesAnother activity we completed was learning to be scientists. We learned that a scientist should observe details, write and draw about what they see. We practiced this with different items from the beach. After we read the book The Important Book and then wrote a poem about our science object in the same format. Science Important PoemsSummer is over, Fall is here.
Back to school for a brand new year! Pack your things, on the bus you go. Make new friends and say hello! Reading, writing, learning more, Than you ever did before! Adding numbers...1,2,3. So much to do, and learn, and see! I'm glad to meet everyone, Get ready for a year of fun! |
